Mods that match the server — every time
Getting kicked for a mod mismatch is DayZ’s most common “can’t join”. Zumbai is designed around it: check before launch, never run ahead of the server, keep a backup for when an update lands badly.
Checked before every launch
Zumbai checks your mods for updates before it launches — and deliberately won’t update a mod the server hasn’t updated yet. Being too current gets you kicked just as fast as being behind.

In-game overlay
One quiet line. Exactly what you tell it.
Not a dashboard hogging your screen — a single, subtle, click-through line in the corner. Real screenshot below — the icons are DayZ’s own HUD; the one text line under them is all of Zumbai’s overlay. You build that line from 16 live values and style every part of it, with different settings per server or server group. Edits apply live, no restart.

Linux
Not a port. A first-class citizen.
Windows-only launchers left Linux players copying mod folders by hand. Zumbai runs on Linux — one command installs everything and it auto-updates from then on. No terminal after that first line. On native Steam everything works exactly as it does on Windows, mod management included. On Flatpak Steam your install and library are found and launched, but for now mods are managed through Steam itself.
Install Zumbai on Linux
Caution: Do not run the Windows .exe file on Linux. It does not work. Use the installer command.
- Install Wine, Winetricks and curl with your package manager. On Mint, Ubuntu or Debian, use this command:
sudo apt install wine winetricks curl. On Fedora, usednf. On Arch, usepacman. - Run the installer:
curl -fsSL https://zumbai.org/install.sh | bash - If the installer tells you that
vm.max_map_countis too low, run the command that it shows. DayZ needs 1048576 or more. - Start Zumbai from the menu or the desktop icon.
Send us the logs
- Run the installer again with a name that we can recognise:
curl -fsSL https://zumbai.org/install.sh | bash -s -- --support=yourname - Write down the name that the installer shows.
- Give us that name on Discord.
The installer sends a new install log and the log of the last run. We keep them for five days, then delete them.
Remove Zumbai
- Run this command:
curl -fsSL https://zumbai.org/install.sh | bash -s -- --uninstall
This removes only the files that the installer made. Your DayZ installation, Steam library and Workshop mods stay where they are.
Why one command, not just an .exe?
Because there’s more to it than running a file.
That line sets up the Wine environment and installs the fonts and runtime DayZ’s launcher needs. It also drops in a small native helper that lets Zumbai talk to Steam properly, which a Windows program under Wine can’t do alone. You run it once; everything after updates itself.
Steam, found wherever it lives
Native package, Flatpak, or both on one machine — Zumbai reads Steam’s own record of where it’s installed and uses the one that’s running.
Same game, same servers
DayZ runs through Steam’s Proton, exactly as if you pressed Play in Steam. Zumbai handles the servers, mods and profiles around it.
If Zumbai does not start
- In a terminal, run
~/.local/share/zumbai/zumbai. - Read the error that it shows.
- If there is no error, read the log:
~/.local/share/zumbai/zumbai.log - Run the installer again. It repairs a broken installation.
- If Zumbai still does not start, send us the logs.
Each installer run is recorded in ~/.local/share/zumbai/install.log.
